On February 21, 1999, The open house event called "Friend ship day" was held in U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka. CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk was deployed in Yokosuka in substitution for CV-62 USS Independence in the last year. She and other US Navy ships were opened to the public.
