April 23 2005, The Yamato Museum(official name: Kure maritime museum) featuring a 1/10 scale model of the battleship Yamato opened in Kure, Hiroshima Pref. where the Yamato and other many IJN warships were constructed. The four-story museum also has on exhibit about 2,000 items on the history of the shipbuilding town and shipbuilding technology.
December 09, 2005, I visited the Yamato museum of Kure in the afternoon after having visited the Yamato film set at Onomichi in the morning. Kure was once the biggest shipbuilding city and naval port in the Orient. The battleship Yamato was build in this city. We the Japanese are experiencing the Yamato boom because this year is the 60th anniversary after the world war II. The Yamato museum is the most popularity tourist attractions of Kure now. The whole town is enveloped in a mood of the battleship Yamato. The Yamato museum is crowded for popularity day after day. But when I visited there it was not crowded, because it was already 4:00 pm. (In addition, the day was a weekday.) For the reason, I saw the museum in plenty of time.
1/10 scale the Battleship Yamato
1/10 scale the battleship Yamato is on display in the entrance hall built in wellhole style. She is about 26 meters (85 ft) long from stem to stern, and is far bigger than a usual fishing boat, and her detail is amazing at that!! She certainly is the most excellent model in all Yamato models.

This big model was built by Yamamoto shipyard Co., Ltd. that is the local shipbuilding company in Kure. But the work was extremely difficult. They researched the battleship Yamato again based on the testimony of the crew who survived from her. And they drew the new plan. Moreover they handpicked the material for perfect work. They were very enthusiastic about this restoration. To our surprise, this company held a launching ceremony of this replica. As a result, It took 8 years to build this model, and this cost no less than all of 200 million yen. A certain industrialist in local Kure contributed this huge cost. The commemorative plate is put to this hall as the proof. A message from him is written in it.
In 1940, I was only a high school student lived in Kure then at the time.
I saw the night sky of the Kure naval arsenal was bright. It was a shine of steel manufacture. And I heard the sound of beaten steel until midnight. Passing several months, the super battleship "Yamato" appeared to the Kure bay. I can't get that her dignified figure out of my mind.
Never forget this... Our hometown Kure had the "Yamato" who was the greatest battleship in the world.
I wish you are proud of Kure.
Sincerely,
Yousei Nitta
Present Kure is nothing but a local city because the shipbuilding industry declined as a Japanese key industry. But after the defeat, the high shipbuilding technology that built the battleship Yamato was used for a peaceful economic activity. It revived postwar poor Japan to the big economic power and relieved many Japanese people. The technology of Kure was useful for prewar and postwar Japan.
His message was full of the love for his home province for Kure.
